A LOVE OF THE CRAFT claims the Harbour Brewing Co. manifesto, founding joy in brew solid, well-rounded beers, returning to the roots of the ingredients and with the heritage of the land and the ocean as inspiration.

Let's dive into a little history from their own words:

“So it was that in 2012, Eddie Lofthouse and brewer-friend, Rhys Powell, were sitting in Padstow Harbour enjoying a beer. Eddie was looking for a new challenge, and inspired by their north Cornwall surroundings and “always dreaming of beer”, the next step was inevitable…to set up a brewery. Premises were first on the agenda, but to obtain the water quality that is so essential to the brewing process, an actual harbourside location wasn’t viable. The Harbour Brewing Co. set down its roots in Bodmin, aptly equidistant from Cornwall’s north and south coast harbours. Neither could have imagined what was ahead, but a shared passion and determination saw the first brews reach the shelves later that year.

A wildcard entry of their first Classic IPA into Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt caused a stir amongst the brewing world and resulted in a win. A successful year on the shelves of a leading supermarket saw the team consolidate its position as Cornwall’s, and indeed one of the UK’s, most innovative brewers. Agility is certainly behind the company’s success, with the brewing team able to react quickly to any market changes, brewing ranges specifically for current demands, as Adam Sargent, Brand Guy at Harbour Brewing Co. explains: “Four to six years ago, everyone wanted clear, bright beers, with a focus on colour, clarity, and carbonation – now the trend is about how hazy a beer is and what fruit notes can be extracted from hops. The market is ever-evolving and we have to follow what it does, because it is still quite a cut-throat business.” It’s no wonder that Harbour Brewing Co. has to keep on its toes, at the last count there are now over 2000 breweries in the UK, so competition is high.

Taste and tradition are what set a Harbour brew apart, combined with an element of modern, forward thinking, all while brewing beers that are consistent in taste and quality. Adam goes on to say: “We’re really lucky to have our own spring, using the water for our brewing straight from its Cornish source. It is very soft water and this lends itself perfectly to lagers and pilsners.” Maintaining a traditional method of making the beer, the process takes three to four weeks in order for flavours to marry and the taste to be just right. The use of clear Cornish spring water, more than anything, sets the beers apart elevated by the use of the very best of additional ingredients. The Bodmin site boasts two breweries. One, a more clinical, large-batch brewery which is all about producing beer consistent in quality. The other is used as an R&D facility, where more experimental, mixed fermentation and sour beers are produced.”
